‘Fair remuneration’ to address power of digital platforms
The Australian government will introduce a binding code, designed to address the power imbalance between news media businesses and digital platforms, says telecompaper. The ‘News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code’ code establishes a negotiating framework enabling parties to bargain in good faith and reach binding agreements. If the parties are unable to reach agreement, then an independent arbiter can determine a fair level of remuneration under an arbitration model. Platforms will be required to give 14 days notice of algorithm changes that impact news media businesses.
