EVOLUTION, INNOVATION, CONNECTION

April 21, 2022

The year 2022 marks 100 years of the BBC and therefore a century of public service broadcasting. Public service broadcasters (PSBs) from around the world were among the founding members of the IIC and, in this issue of Intermedia, Patrick Barwise examines the challenges they face in today’s highly competitive audiovisual landscape and their importance as trusted sources of news in the era of online disinformation. Jean Paul Simon provides an empirical history of podcasts, the first of which was created around 80 years after the first BBC radio transmission, and discusses concerns about the platformisation of culture amidst the ascent of podcasting in the “ear economy”. This demonstrates not only the ongoing relevance of audio in the market but yet another innovation cycle of our time. Yvonne Marie Andrés reflects on ten years of the Internet Hall of Fame which was launched by the Internet Society in 2012 and – looking forwards – the winner of the IIC Future Leaders Competition for 2021, Andreea Antuca, provides guidance to policymakers in designing approaches to online content moderation. “Evolution, Innovation, Connection” was the theme of the 10th UNESCO World Radio Day in 2021,which is precisely what the IIC exists to foster on everything from public broadcasting, to podcasts to platforms, while World Radio Day 2022 will focus on “Trust”, with radio still the most accessible platform in the world. At these milestones, I invite you to reflect upon the technologies, trends and transformations that shape our world and your role in shaping the consequential TMT sector. Chris Chapman, president, IIC
