IIC Press Release
Global media research project takes off
A new research programme from Carleton University, Ottawa, supported by the IIC, has received funding approval. The USD 2 million Global Media and Internet Concentration Research Project (GMIC) will run for 7 years and is designed to answer the deceptively simple question: are the media – collectively and individually – becoming more or less concentrated?
The project will be directed by Professor Dwayne Winseck of Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communications, working with a team of 50 academics in 40 countries to analyse everything from mobile phones to search engines, online advertising, television, film and video services, newspapers, film exhibition, digital games and books.
‘With countries around the world convening numerous public inquiries and legislative initiatives, it is more important than ever that these decisions are supported by research that is historically and theoretically informed, and empirically-rich’ said Winseck.
The IIC will be a non-academic partner in the project, providing archive information and convening industry and regulatory fora. Project researchers will be invited to present through the IIC programme at key stages as the work unfolds.
In a personal message to partners, Professor Winseck said ‘I cannot thank you enough for joining this project. We have an amazing group of close to 50 researchers from more than 30 universities around the world and a diverse group of external partners from civil society, industry, government and think tanks’.
IIC Director General, Lynn Robinson, said, ‘the IIC are delighted to be part of such an ambitious and important research project. The information that it reveals will help inform the decisions of policymakers and regulators for many years to come.’
Work on the project will begin immediately.
Ends.
