Event | Regulating digital platforms – Part 2: getting down to details with the ACCC’s newest report on competition and consumer law reform

November 14, 2022

Join the IIC Australian Chapter and industry experts for an end-of-year event examining the Government’s proposed approach to digital platform regulation.

Amongst the many challenges facing the Australian Government is whether it should take forward sector-specific competition and consumer protection regulation of digital platforms, in light of the recommendations made by the ACCC in its Interim Report No. 5: Updating competition and consumer law for digital platform services, which was handed to Government at the end of September. If more regulation is imposed, what will be the impact beyond the major digital platforms that have been the ACCC’s focus of digital markets investigations to date? How closely could Australia move towards the approaches in the European Union and United Kingdom, and what could change mean in areas such as consumer protection regulation and merger law reforms?

Part 2 of the IIC’s two-part series on regulating digital platforms, this seminar follows our July overview from the European Commission’s Menno Cox of Europe’s new Digital Markets Act and Digital Services Act.

A keynote from the ACCC will be followed by an expert panel discussion, with an opportunity for an end-of-year catch-up with your industry colleagues after the seminar.

Keynote Speaker:

David Abkiewicz

Director of the Digital Platforms Branch, ACCC

Panel Discussion – Moderated by Angela Flannery

Dr Katharine Kemp, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, UNSW Sydney

John Durie, National columnist, The Australian and Smart Company

Dave Poddar, Partner, Clifford Chance
