This event explores global perspectives and key challenges of regulating online advertising. With various government reviews underway that will impact how this rapidly evolving industry is regulated, including the Privacy Act review as well as reviews looking at online safety, advertising restrictions, AI and scams; this event will explore the global context of online advertising, including the technical and economic challenges involved in regulating it, and in implementing different laws in a global environment. It will also consider how these issues are being approached in the US and EU, and what we can learn from other jurisdictions.

Anthony Katsur – Chief Executive Officer, IAB Tech Lab
Anthony Katsur is a digital media veteran with more than twenty-five years of executive leadership at the intersection of technology innovation, product leadership, business strategy, and growth. As Chief Executive Officer for IAB Tech Lab, Katsur is responsible for overseeing product, engineering, membership, and operations teams for the digital advertising industry’s global technical standards-setting organization.
Katsur has previously held positions at companies including DoubleClick, MediaMath, Rubicon, Sonoboi, Nexstar Media Group, and more. A sought-after speaker, he has appeared at events including the National Association of Broadcasters, AdAge’s Brand Summit, and Advertising Week and has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, AdAge, Adweek, AdExchanger, and Digiday.
Most recently, Katsur was Senior Vice President, Strategy, Operations and Corporate Development at Nexstar Media Group, Inc., the largest local broadcaster in the United States. Anthony was responsible for overseeing strategy, technology platforms, and corporate development across Nexstar’s portfolio of digital assets.
Prior to Nexstar, Katsur served as President of Sonobi, where he implemented their product and go-to-market strategy around people-based marketing. Katsur developed strategic partnerships with leading media companies, agencies and brands across the globe.
Katsur also held global leadership roles at Rubicon Project as Executive Vice President of Business Operations and General Manager of Buyer Cloud and held global executive roles at MediaMath and Maxifier, where he served as Chief Executive Officer. Earlier in his career, he joined DoubleClick via the acquisition of NetGravity where he led multiple engineering divisions and grew through a series of product and engineering leadership and general management roles.
Daniel Knapp – Chief Economist, IAB Europe
Dr. Daniel Knapp is Chief Economist at IAB Europe. He is an advertising and media analyst with more than 15 years of international experience. He has served in leadership roles spanning market analysis, strategic advisory, and business intelligence. Daniel spent 11 years at IHS Markit, latterly as Executive Director for Technology, Media and Telecoms. He was also an associated expert on media and AI at the European Commission. Daniel received his PhD from the London School of Economics (LSE) on the sociology of algorithms and the datafication of media. In addition to his role at IAB Europe, he is CSO at Twins Digital, a marketing services company, and partner at Ecuiti, a data science firm.
Alexander Smith – Head of Corporate Affairs, Knowledge & Information, Google
Alexander Smith is the Global Head of Corporate Affairs for Google’s Knowledge & Information team, which includes Google’s Search, Advertising, Maps, Gemini, News, Payments, and Commerce businesses. He works closely with Google’s most senior product leaders to advise them on policy and product strategy.
Prior to his current role, Alexander has held a number of leadership positions at Google, including leading Google Fiber’s Deals, Partnerships, and Commercial Procurement team in New York City. He started his career as a lawyer in Sydney, Australia working in complex commercial litigation and has extensive experience across the public and private sectors, including working at the Federal Court of Australia, the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in Canberra, and the United States Senate in Washington D.C.
Alexander has a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University, a Masters in Law from the University of Cambridge, a Bachelor of Law (First Class Honours) and a Bachelor of International Relations from Bond University

Sophie Dawson – Partner, Johnson Winter Slattery
Sophie is a leading Australian media, information technology and privacy partner. She has extensive experience in advising and acting for companies and agencies in relation to complex and every day privacy matters. She has acted for leading global and domestic internet and media companies in privacy and other law reform processes. She has also advised leading media, internet and computer games companies (and others) on privacy and regulatory compliance and disputes. She has conducted privacy impact assessments for some of the largest and most significant public and private sector projects, which has included advice on changes to the law and on public awareness campaigns, and regularly provides training and other support to clients. Sophie also has a lot of experience in advising on data breach response, including notification of the Privacy Commissioner’s office, the police and other relevant bodies as well as individuals.
Sophie has been recognised as a leading privacy partner in the directories for many years. She is recognised in directories including Chambers Asia-Pacific, Asia Pacific Legal500, Who’s Who Legal, Best Lawyers and Doyles for privacy and technology, media and telecommunications more generally.
Sophie is co-author of Thomson Reuter’s Media & Internet Law & Practice and is the current author of the Internet title in Laws of Australia. She is a past president of the Communications and Media Law Association and is a current member of the UTS Centre for Media Transition Advisory Board.
Sarah Waladan – Director of Legal & Policy at IAB Australia
Sarah Waladan is the Director of Policy & Regulatory Affairs at IAB Australia. Ms Waladan works with IAB member organisations, policy makers and the global IAB network, advising on communications law and policy issues.
Prior to joining IAB Ms Waladan held various legal and policy roles across government and the private sector with a focus on media and intellectual property issues, most recently as Head of Legal and Regulatory Affairs at Free TV.
