US reliance on low band spectrum results in minimal improvements over 4G
Ars Technica reports on statistics from OpenSignal demonstrating the variation in 5G download speeds across 11 countries. While South Korea, Taiwan and Australia come out at the top, the US was bottom, with speeds lower than its neighbour Canada achieved using 4G. OpenSignal’s report cited the extensive use of lower-band spectrum as one reason for the modest speeds currently available in the US; high band spectrum offers a much greater upgrade.
