This will be an interactive session, with attendees encouraged to discuss and debate 2023’s key issues around content, artificial intelligence and intellectual property. Professor Matthew Sag is Professor of Law, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Data Science at Emory University Law School. Professor Sag is an expert in copyright law and intellectual property. He is a leading U.S. authority on the fair use doctrine in copyright law in jurisdictions where it applies and its implications for researchers in the fields of text data mining, machine learning and AI. He testified to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on Intellectual Property in relation to copyright and Generative AI in July 2023. Matthew Sag is a Professor of Law in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Data Science at Emory University Law School. Professor Sag is an expert in copyright law and intellectual property. He is a leading U.S. authority on the fair use doctrine in copyright law and its implications for researchers in the fields of text data mining, machine learning, and AI.
Professor Sag was born and educated in Australia. He earned honors in Law at the Australian National University in Canberra and clerked for Justice Paul Finn at the Australian Federal Court. Professor Sag practiced law in London as an associate at Arnold & Porter, and in Silicon Valley with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. Prior to Emory, Professor Sag taught at DePaul University and Loyola Chicago; he has also held visiting posts at Northwestern University, the University of Virginia and the University of Melbourne.
Professor Sag’s research has been published in leading journals such as Nature and Science, and the law reviews of the University of California Berkeley, Georgetown, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Iowa and William & Mary, among others. He testified to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on Intellectual Property in relation to copyright and Generative AI in July 2023. Professor Sag is widely cited in academic works, court submissions, judicial opinions, government reports, and in the media.

Simon is a technology transactions lawyer. He specialises in complex procurement and outsourcing transactions such as business transformation, core applications, IT and business process outsourcing, cloud services, telecommunications and public infrastructure.
He also advises on intellectual property management, commercialisation and other commercial transactions.
Simon’s considerable experience in the public sector comes from advising the three largest state governments, the Federal Government and four of the five largest local authorities in Australia on technology transactions. He complements this with his work in the private sector, advising large corporates and financial institutions, as well as technology suppliers ranging from start-ups to global enterprises.
Simon has dual qualifications in law and computer science and a keen interest in technology. He has been involved in many of firm’s own technology initiatives, including currently sitting on the firm’s national Cyber Security Board which sets policy and oversees the firm’s approach to information security.
