Tech Groups ask EU to limit liability for content moderation

EDiMA report proposes legal protections similar to US

The Financial Times says that a report from the European Digital Media Association calls on the EU to create legal protection framework for platforms when policing harmful content. Under current rules, online platforms are not liable for material on their sites unless they have ‘actual knowledge’ of it. But the upcoming Digital Services Act platforms is expected to require a more ‘pro-active’ approach to moderation, exposing platforms to additional liability. A new safeguard would be similar to that provided in Section 230 of the US Communications Decency Act, says the paper.
